Thinking about applying for the Artistic Research PhD programme at the Estonian Academy of Arts? EKA Doctoral School invites prospective applicants to join a preparatory course beginning on 17 February 2026. Registration is open until 10 February.

Artistic research builds on the professional practice of artists, designers, and architects, generating new knowledge that takes shape both through creative practice (such as artworks, creative processes, products, or services) and through written research. The course focuses on developing an artistic research project and explains how to connect a research problem, research methods, and creative practice into a coherent whole.

The course consists of four seminars and an individual consultation. The seminars will be led by Dr Jaana Päeva, Head of the Art and Design Doctoral Programme, and Dr Liina Unt. Alongside the theoretical sessions, current doctoral candidates in art and design will present their ongoing artistic research projects. During the consultation session, participants will receive individual feedback on their draft research proposals.

Please note: The course will take place in person at the Estonian Academy of Arts (Põhja pst 7, Tallinn).

How to apply

To apply, please send a short statement (maximum 1.5 pages) to irene.hutsi@artun.ee by 10 February. Your statement should outline:

  • your motivation for joining the course,
  • your previous experience, and
  • the research topic or field you would like to explore.

Places are limited. Confirmation of participation will be sent no later than 13 February.

The course will be held in English.
